I believe that anyone can learn to play the violin or piano at any age. I often hear people comment that they can't learn an instrument because they weren't born talented. They can't learn because they don't have a musical ear. These statements are inaccurate. Talent is created. Talent is learned. With consistent nurturing and dedication, anyone studying an instrument can become talented.
I love the way a colleague of mine put it. He said, “Music is everywhere. We often don't realize the importance of music within are daily lives until it's not there. Imagine no music in movies, youtube videos, church, holidays, family gatherings, etc. What would it be like? It would be quiet. So much joy is felt and expressed through music. While learning an instrument, we get to explore the connections between the heart, mind, and body. The heart feels something. The brain gives instructions to the body to execute the feelings of the heart.” - Michael N.
My goal is to give each student something to love and embrace. To help them feel successful in all they do. And to enjoy developing musical ability to a high level.
I like to use a variety of teaching methods to help aid my teaching to meet the needs of each individual student and to best help each student find their creative way of expressing themselves. I focus on the ways we use our bodies to get the best tone out of our instrument. I focus on rhythm, feeling the beat of music and being able to read the various rhythms. I focus on teaching students how to practice effectively by using repetitions and breaking things into small pieces. This helps students feel that with consistent practicing, progress will be made each week and they will feel successful. I help train students ears to hear certain elements of music that will aid in their success of learning the instrument. Students learn the skills of note reading. Within my studio, we study composers, music history, harmony, melody, composition. We learn much of this in a group setting where students can learn from each other. This is done in a fun and safe environment.
Beginning piano or violin students begin their journey of music with music from the Suzuki piano and violin series. These books focus on classical repertoire. I use the philosophies associated with the Suzuki method. You can learn about Dr. Suzuki here. Learning to play classical music makes it possible to be able to play other genres of music which are incorporated when the students are ready to learn these other styles.
As students work through the Suzuki series, I find a sense as to what each student likes and I begin incorporating other songs into the mix. Each student is different and I want to help each individual to find what brings them joy on their instrument and have something to carry with them through life.
I am a certified Suzuki instructor and I focus my instruction using the Suzuki philosophies. I feel that through my years of teaching I have created a well rounded and balanced music experience, teaching lifelong skills for students to use throughout their life.
